Big Ideas Build Communities

At Gravity::Works Architecture, we believe good design begins with curiosity, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. Those are the same skills we were excited to share during STEM Day at the Butler County Historical Society Home of the Kansas Oil Museum.

Our team members, McLaren and Kallie, led an interactive city planning challenge that introduced students to some of the same concepts architects and planners consider every day. Working in teams, students designed their own communities using a provided landscape while following planning guidelines for adjacent districts. Along the way, they also had to respond to an unexpected event that required them to rethink and adapt their designs—a reminder that flexibility is an important part of every design process.

Once their plans were complete, each team gave its city a name and presented its ideas, explaining the decisions behind its layout and how it responded to the challenge. It was rewarding to see students collaborate, communicate, and defend their ideas with confidence.

Activities like this help demonstrate that architecture is about much more than designing buildings. It involves understanding how people live, work, and connect, while balancing creativity with practical constraints. Through hands-on experiences, students can begin to see how STEM skills are applied to solve real-world problems and shape the communities around us.

We appreciate the Butler County Historical Society and the Kansas Oil Museum for inviting us to participate in STEM Day and for creating opportunities for students to explore careers through engaging, hands-on learning.
