This extensive project was the result of a long-range Master Plan completed by BCC Administration and Gravity::Works in 2006. It was facilitated in four phases, allowing the college to grow into their building as the budget could bear it. This multiphase renovation converted an industrial building into a one-stop shop for Butler’s Andover Campus.
We joined two existing classroom buildings on the campus, using brick masonry and site-cast concrete, to create the Student Union; this includes Butler Bistro, a Student Life Center and Tech Hub, the L.W. Nixon Library and small and large meeting spaces.
Due to the 5000 Building’s size, a testament to Butler’s growth, wayfinding, student access, and small-group space became critical to the Andover student experience. The design brings a cohesive and modern look to the classrooms, offices, Student Services, and the Student Union.
The project features mezzanine lounges, eating areas with stained-concrete floors and steel columnar ‘trees’ that hold skylights flooding the interior spaces with warm, natural light. That natural light also falls into adjoining classrooms designed with windows that overlook student areas.
