A Community Vision Realized: Chanute Advances Agricultural Education in Kansas
The ribbon cutting for the James & Jean Cooper Animal Science Learning Center at the Kepley-Tennis Agricultural Complex marks a significant step forward for agricultural education in Kansas. Located at Chanute High School, the new facility reflects a long-term investment in FFA programs, career and technical education (CTE), and hands-on learning environments that prepare students for careers in agriculture and related industries. But the real story behind this project goes beyond the building itself.
Building Capacity for FFA and Ag Education
Across Kansas, many school districts face ongoing challenges in sustaining agricultural education programs—particularly when it comes to recruiting and retaining qualified educators. Chanute is taking a different approach.
With strong leadership from FFA advisors Caitlyn LaHaye and Zach Callaghan, USD 413 has built a growing agricultural program that now requires expanded space and resources. The Animal Science Learning Center directly supports that growth by providing a dedicated, purpose-built environment for hands-on instruction. Students now have access to real-world learning opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom limitations—supporting coursework in animal science, veterinary pathways, and agricultural systems.

The Animal Science Learning Center is a clear example of a successful public-private partnership in school facility development. While USD 413 provided foundational funding, the project was elevated through the generosity of local donors and leadership from the campaign committee. This combined investment allowed the district to deliver a facility that exceeds typical expectations for communities of this size.
